Westchase Golf Club is the course its own neighbors once talked about buying. In January 2018 the community’s development district weighed a purchase, according to Patch.

This Westchase Golf Club review is about a public course in Tampa that is still taking tee times today. I found no sign that purchase went through. It is a daily-fee track with water and wetlands on the back nine, a long par-3 over water, and an average golfer rating of 4.0.

It is a good course. It is also one that will not blow you away. The Florida golf club archive lists the other Florida clubs we have scored.

Westchase does not try to be Pebble Beach. It tries to be the best round you can get in northwest Tampa on a Tuesday afternoon, and that is a fair goal.

Club Overview

Westchase Golf Club is at 11602 Westchase Golf Drive in Tampa, Hillsborough County. It opened in 1992 as the centerpiece of the Westchase master-planned community, and Lloyd Clifton is credited as the architect. The course is a public, daily-fee facility. I could not verify the current owner, so I do not describe the ownership here.

What I Liked

The best part of Westchase is its mix of settings. You play through pines on the front and through lakes and cypress on the back.

  • Par 72 layout of roughly 6,700 yards, a comfortable length for most golfers
  • The par-3 third hole, listed at 212 yards over water, is a memorable signature
  • A front nine through pines and a back nine through lakes, wetlands and cypress, so the two halves do not feel alike
  • A driving range, practice bunker and putting green, plus Cestone Golf Academy instruction
  • Friendly service, rated about 4.6 out of 5 by GolfPass reviewers

What I Didn’t Like

Condition is the recurring knock.

  • Conditions average about 3.8 out of 5 on GolfPass, and some reviewers mention rough greens and maintenance gaps
  • Dynamic pricing means the same tee time can cost very different amounts depending on when you book
  • Wetland and water carries can slow rounds for higher handicappers
  • Published course data conflicts across sources, so slope and rating numbers are hard to pin down

Membership & Fees

Westchase does not publish membership initiation fees or dues that I could find. The course is run as daily-fee play, so the useful number is the green fee.

GolfPass says rates start at $33 and up. GolfNow prepaid tee times ran roughly $58.99 to $79.99. Those prices move with demand and season, so treat them as a range, not a rate card.

Facilities & Amenities

This is a working daily-fee club. The facilities are practical.

  • 18 holes, par 72, with Bermuda greens per a third-party listing
  • Driving range, practice bunker and putting green
  • 9,500-square-foot clubhouse with a pro shop and dining
  • Golf lessons and clinics through Cestone Golf Academy
  • GPS available on carts, per GolfPass

Best Time to Visit

November through April is peak. Humidity drops, the Bermuda plays firmer, and Tampa golfers fill the tee sheet.

Summer means afternoon thunderstorms and a lot of humidity. If you play then, book the first slot of the day and be ready to leave the course if the sky turns.

Dress Code & Etiquette

Westchase lists a collared shirt, no denim, no tank tops, soft spikes and hats forward, according to its GolfNow listing.

Bring a collared shirt and you meet every item on that list.

Who Is This Club For?

This club is a good fit if you live in the Westchase, Citrus Park or Oldsmar area and want a regular public course with a range and lessons.

This club is a good fit if you like water and wetland holes and do not mind a few rough patches.

Skip this one if you are driving in from out of town and want a destination round. Pick a resort course instead.

Skip this one if you only play in July and August. The weather works against you more than the course does.

If you are weighing up other Florida options, Reunion Resort and Golf Club is worth a look as well.

People Also Ask: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Westchase Golf Club public or private?

Westchase Golf Club is public. It operates as a daily-fee course in Tampa, so you can book tee times without being a member. Rates vary by day and time, and carts are included according to GolfPass. No membership initiation fee or dues are published.

How much is a round at Westchase Golf Club?

GolfPass lists rates starting at $33, while GolfNow prepaid times have been about $59 to $80. Prices change with season and demand because the course uses dynamic pricing. Carts are included per GolfPass. Check the booking page for the exact amount on your date.

Who designed Westchase Golf Club?

Lloyd Clifton designed Westchase Golf Club, which opened in 1992 as part of the Westchase community. One source credits the firm as Clifton, Ezell and Clifton. The course plays to par 72 at about 6,700 yards, though published slope and rating numbers conflict across sources.

What is the dress code at Westchase Golf Club?

The course’s GolfNow listing calls for a collared shirt, no denim, no tank tops, soft spikes and hats worn forward. Policies can change, so confirm with the pro shop if you are unsure. A collared shirt and soft spikes meet the listed standard on any day.

Does Westchase Golf Club have a driving range?

Yes. Westchase has a driving range, a practice bunker and a putting green. Cestone Golf Academy offers instruction and clinics there. The 9,500-square-foot clubhouse includes a pro shop and dining. Ask the pro shop for current range hours and ball prices.

Verdict & Score

I rate Westchase Golf Club 3.9 out of 5. It is a sensible, scenic public course with good staff and a decent practice setup. Condition inconsistency and dynamic pricing keep it below the best Florida public clubs. How we score clubs explains the scale.

Play it as a local value round. Do not plan a vacation around it.

Author Note

This review applies the same three questions to every club: what it costs, what annoys golfers, and who should skip it. Westchase publishes no membership price, and its recurring complaint is conditioning.
