Patterson River Golf Club is one of the few Melbourne clubs that puts its whole fee sheet on the website. Subscriptions, joining fees, the compulsory house credit, all of it. That alone earns it a read.
Out the back is a lake system covering 15 hectares, a 1925 farm-turned-golf-course in Bonbeach, and a bayside setting about 30km from the CBD. Here is our full Patterson River Golf Club review.
GCR Score: 4.0 / 5
Verdict: Recommended for south-east golfers who want daily comps, honest pricing and water in play.
Best For: Regular members, age-based joiners, social groups booking a round
Think Twice If: You want a famous architect’s name or hate carrying lake hazards

Course Overview
The club history page says the land began as Priestly family farmland in 1925. Golfers travelled from Carrum station by horse and jinker to play on good turf. After a 1948 purchase it became a members-only club, which the club describes as an all-weather Sandbelt-style course.
Be careful with that Sandbelt label. Bonbeach sits next to the famous corridor rather than inside it, and this review does not rate it as a Sandbelt club.
What it does offer is a 15-hectare lake system, couch fairways and Penn links bent greens, with plenty of bunkers. Bird life is part of the pitch.
Standout Holes
Pick the ninth first, because the club says it is the hardest. It is a par 4 of 403m from the blue tees, stroke index 2, and a tee shot down the left is the only way to get a sensible approach.
The 14th is a tidy 377m par 4 with out of bounds left and a lake right. A big tree guards the left side of the green, so club selection off the tee matters more than raw length.
The 18th is a par 5 of 507m from the blues. You can lay up short of the left bunker and water, or go for it if you can carry everything. It is a proper finishing hole, and it rewards a brave card on a day when you need a birdie.
Green Fees and Visitor Access
Patterson River is a members’ club that accepts non-member bookings through a public registration. You register on the online bookings page first, then see available times.
The page I could read does not list visitor green fees, cart hire or handicap requirements. A couple of directories quote very low weekday prices, but I would not trust them without checking the booking system itself.
Ring the club on 03 9772 1855 if you want a number before you register.
Membership and Annual Subscriptions
This is where the club shines. Fees for 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027 are on the official fees page, and each total includes A$445 for affiliation, insurance and competitions (A$295 for juniors). The adult totals also include the mandatory house account credit, which is why the gap between subscription and total is A$645 for most adult categories.
| Category | Subscription | Total with levies |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Day | A$3,714 | A$4,359 |
| 6 Day (Sun to Fri) | A$3,157 | A$3,802 |
| 5 Day (Mon to Fri) | A$2,600 | A$3,245 |
| 30 to 39 years | A$2,785 | A$3,430 |
| NXTGEN (23 to 29) | A$1,709 | A$2,354 |
| Intermediate B (21 to 22) | A$1,114 | A$1,659 |
| Intermediate A (18 to 21) | A$929 | A$1,474 |
| Junior (under 18) | A$216 | A$511 |
The fee table lists Intermediate A as 18 to 21 years, but the application form on the same site says 18 to 20, so check your age band with the club. Joining fees are A$2,000 for most adult categories, A$1,500 for 30 to 39, A$1,000 for NXTGEN and A$250 for the Intermediates. There is also a mandatory house account credit of A$200 for adults and A$100 for Intermediates.
The club’s website says there is no waiting list for joining. Monthly and six-monthly payment plans exist on selected categories. A full 7 Day member who plays three times a week pays well under A$30 a round on the subscription alone, so the maths works for regulars. Our breakdown of what 83 Australian Golf Clubs Actually Charge shows how those figures compare nationally.
Competitions and GA Handicap
Men’s and women’s competitions run every day, and competition fees are bundled into the levy. Members need a Golf Australia handicap. The women’s pathway has four steps from beginner to full member. The guide on how to get a golf handicap in Australia explains the handicap system.
Facilities
- Kapers Bistro and Cafe, with a terrace over the course
- Function room for up to 400 guests
- Pro shop, coaching and club fitting
- Practice facilities, with complimentary range balls for members
Third-party listings show bistro lunches from 11am to 2.30pm and dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Check current hours, because those listings age.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn and spring are best. The lakes sit full, the greens run true and the bayside breeze is mild.
Winter can be soggy, though the club calls it an all-weather course. January heat is the main drawback, so book an early tee time.
How to Get There
The club is at 47 The Fairway, Bonbeach, roughly 30km from Melbourne CBD. Driving is the simplest option, and the club lists ample parking. The Frankston train line runs through Bonbeach if you want to leave the car at home.
Dress Code
The club asks for casual but neat and tidy attire for members, guests and visitors. Detailed regulations sit in a separate dress code document, so read that before you pack the bag.
The course care page also covers bunker raking, divots and pace of play. Fill your footprints in the sand.
Who Is Patterson River For?
This club is a good fit if you want a regular home course with transparent costs. The age-based categories help younger golfers get in cheaply.
Skip it if you want a famous design pedigree or a short, forgiving layout. Water and out of bounds come up often.

Where is Patterson River Golf Club?
Patterson River is at 47 The Fairway, Bonbeach VIC 3196, a bayside suburb about 30km from Melbourne CBD. It sits on the south-east edge of the Sandbelt corridor. The Frankston train line runs through Bonbeach, and the club lists ample parking for drivers.
What is the hardest hole at Patterson River?
The club says the ninth is its hardest hole. It is a 403m par 4 from the blue tees, stroke index 2, and the drive needs to find the left side of the fairway to open up a sensible approach to the green.
Final Verdict
Patterson River Golf Club scores 4.0 out of 5. It is a sensible, well-priced members’ course with real water hazards and openly published costs. How GCR scores each club explains the 4.0.
It loses points because visitor fees are hidden behind a registration wall and the course is not in the Sandbelt’s top tier. For a regular member in Frankston, Seaford or Mordialloc, though, the value is clear.
