Best For: Serious golfers, Brisbane visitors, and players wanting modern design
Think Twice If: Value matters more than championship conditioning or you dislike complex greens

Nudgee Golf Club has changed more than many long-time Brisbane golfers realise. The old North and South courses are gone. Today’s 36-hole complex contains the championship Kurrai and the shorter, links-style Bulka. Both opened together in February 2023 after a major redevelopment.

This Nudgee Golf Club review explains which course suits you. Kurrai is longer, more penal, and hosts the Queensland PGA Championship. Bulka offers greater playability but remains strategically demanding. Wetlands, elevated green complexes, deep bunkers, and exposed wind define both.

Visitor access is straightforward, although the A$95 online fee is expensive for suburban Brisbane golf. The club’s 2026 membership schedule also carries a A$2,000 entrance fee for adult categories. Nudgee delivers a modern tournament-standard experience, but value depends on using its facilities and choosing the right course. The decision matters because the layouts offer noticeably different tests. For repeat visitors, that contrast creates replay value for most golfers.

History and Redevelopment

image

Nudgee formed in 1930 on the Childs family vineyard.

Gateway Motorway projects later removed holes, reducing the club to 27. Compensation supported James Wilcher’s comprehensive redesign.

Kurrai means sunset in the local Turrbal language. It occupies the western side and provides the championship test. Bulka means sunrise and follows Kedron Brook on the eastern side.

Our key takeaway: Nudgee is now a positioning course. Study the flag location before choosing your line from the tee.

Kurrai Versus Bulka

Kurrai stretches approximately 6,394 metres from its longest regular configuration. It uses water, angled landing zones, and demanding green complexes. The course hosts the Queensland PGA Championship and suits stronger ball-strikers.

The short ninth provides a memorable strategic choice. Water protects the front and left of its green. A direct attack can produce birdie, but a conservative lay-up leaves a precise pitch.

The long tenth asks back-tee players to carry water across the dogleg. Missing the aggressive line creates immediate penalty. A safer drive right leaves a demanding approach into a bunkered green.

Bulka measures about 5,727 metres and carries a links-style character. It is shorter and intended to be more social. However, wind, wetlands, and shared design principles prevent it becoming easy.

KurraiLow and mid handicappers seeking tournament golfLength, water carries, complex green positioning
BulkaSocial groups, shorter hitters, and relaxed roundsWind, wetlands, and deceptive approach angles

Visitors should request their preferred course when booking. “All Courses” inventory can otherwise leave the final allocation unclear. Play Kurrai first if only one round fits the schedule.

Green Fees and Visitor Access

Nudgee welcomes public players through its online timesheet. On 1 July 2026, listed afternoon prices were A$95 for 18 holes and A$55 for nine. Earlier or weekend inventory may differ.

The price exceeds nearby alternatives.

Use this booking sequence:

  1. Choose Kurrai or Bulka before checking available times.
  2. Confirm renovation work and cart restrictions.
  3. Reserve hire equipment directly with the golf shop.
  4. Check in at least 15 minutes before play.

Course Conditions: The Honest Take

TifEagle greens, wintergreen couch fairways, and Zoysia bunker surrounds present well. The modern greens can be fast and difficult to read.

Reviews also mention sandy fairways during maintenance and confusing directional signage. Some visitors consider A$95 excessive compared with nearby clubs. Old carts without GPS attract additional criticism at the A$50 hire price.

Nudgee publishes course and cart status, but visitors should still ask about renovations before paying.

Membership Fees and Waiting Lists

image

Seven-day membership is full and reviewed regularly. A waiting list is available, while five-day, five-day intermediate, and junior categories remain open. Five-day members receive priority when seven-day places become available.

A separate A$84.75 GolfID charge applies in the club’s calculation example. The financial year runs from 1 October through 30 September. Subscription portions are prorated, but levies and insurance are not.

Entrance fees are due in full. Two subscription instalments cost an extra A$100, while an external provider offers monthly payments.

GA Ratings and Handicap Choice

Nudgee uses ability-based wildlife tee markers rather than traditional gendered colours. Kurrai offers four positions, while Bulka offers three. Players can select difficulty while remaining in the same competition.

On Kurrai, the Black Duck markers carry scratch 74 and slope 136 for men. Silver Turtle carries scratch 69 and slope 124. For women, those slopes are 145 and 132 respectively.

A male golfer with GA Handicap 18 receives about 22 shots from Black Duck. The same player receives about 16 from Silver Turtle. This system makes the club more inclusive without flattening Kurrai’s championship challenge.

Competitions run daily. Visitors with active Golf Australia handicaps may enter available events outside restricted member periods.

Pennant and Tournament Golf

image

Nudgee supports men’s, women’s, seniors’, and junior pennant teams. Norman von Nida played in its first pennant-winning side during 1931.

Kurrai hosts the Queensland PGA Championship. The 2026 tournament is scheduled for 19 through 22 November. Tournament preparations may alter visitor access or course setup.

Reciprocal Rights

Nudgee publishes reciprocal partners across Australia and overseas. A golf-shop introduction letter is required when visiting Australian partners. Charges range from no green fee to the destination’s member-guest rate.

Facilities

  • Practice: 300-metre range, grass and mat tees, short-game bunker, and two putting greens
  • Teaching: dedicated centre opened in 2025 with PGA tuition and fitting
  • Clubhouse: breakfast, lunch, bar, function rooms, and Wild Duck Terrace
  • Golf shop: equipment, club hire, pull buggies, carts, and competition services
  • Parking: ample free parking with motorway and airport access

The kitchen serves breakfast and lunch, but not dinner. Confirm closing times before an afternoon booking.

Best Time to Play

April through September provides Brisbane’s best walking temperatures and lower humidity. Winter tee times begin around 6:32 am. Summer starts can begin near 6 am, which helps players avoid afternoon heat.

Heavy rain can affect carts and low ground. November tournament preparation may also restrict ordinary visitor times.

How to Get There and Dress Code

  • Sandgate Golf Club: inexpensive nine-hole golf with a relaxed local atmosphere

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play Nudgee Golf Club?

Yes. Nudgee accepts public online bookings across its available courses. Ordinary social players do not need club membership. Visitors wanting competition entry need an active Golf Australia handicap. Saturday access can be more restricted, so check the live timesheet and course allocation before paying.

How much are Nudgee Golf Club green fees?

The public booking portal showed A$95 for 18 holes and A$55 for nine on 1 July 2026. Rates can vary by date and tee time. Social groups under 40 also pay A$95 each, while confirmed groups of 40 or more pay A$70.

Which is better, Kurrai or Bulka?

Kurrai is the stronger choice for one serious round. It is longer, more strategic, and hosts the Queensland PGA Championship. Bulka suits social groups and shorter hitters better, although wind and wetlands remain challenging. Playing both gives the clearest picture of Nudgee’s redevelopment.

Is seven-day membership open at Nudgee?

No. Seven-day membership is full in July 2026, but the club maintains a waiting list. Five-day members receive priority for future openings. Five-day, intermediate five-day, and junior applications remain available. Confirm current status before paying the A$2,000 adult entrance fee.

Does Nudgee have a driving range?

Yes. The club operates a 300-metre driving range with natural grass and mat hitting areas. It also provides a short-game area, practice bunker, and two putting greens. A redeveloped range and dedicated teaching centre opened during 2025, strengthening the practice offering.

What do Kurrai and Bulka mean?

The names come from the local Turrbal language. Kurrai means sunset and identifies the western championship course. Bulka means sunrise and identifies the eastern links-style course beside Kedron Brook. The naming acknowledges the land’s long role as a traditional Turrbal meeting place.

Pros and Cons

What We Liked

  • Two distinct modern courses within 20 minutes of Brisbane Airport
  • Kurrai provides genuine tournament-level strategy and challenge
  • Excellent practice range, teaching centre, and short-game facilities
  • Ability-based tee markers improve choice for every handicap
  • Strong daily competition and pennant culture

What Could Be Better

  • A$95 visitor fee feels expensive against nearby alternatives
  • A$2,000 entrance fee makes adult membership costly initially
  • Seven-day membership is currently full
  • Directional signage and older non-GPS carts receive criticism
  • No evening dining for late groups

Final Verdict

Nudgee Golf Club earns 4.2 out of 5. Kurrai gives Brisbane a credible public-access championship course. Bulka adds valuable variety without becoming a token second layout.

The A$95 green fee weakens the value score, particularly during maintenance. Ask about course allocation and renovations before booking. When conditions are strong, Nudgee’s design and practice facilities justify the premium.
