Verdict: Recommended — a friendly municipal value with more character than its price suggests

Best For: DFW golfers who want playable public golf, good greens, and skyline views without premium pricing

Avoid If: You need a polished resort setting or lose patience when a busy tee sheet slows down

Last Reviewed: June 30, 2026

The view behind the tenth tee tells you what Irving Golf Club does best. Downtown Dallas sits on the horizon, while broad fairways and prairie grass frame a practical municipal course. This Irving Golf Club review has a simple answer: Irving is one of DFW’s better low-pressure public values in 2026.

It is not a luxury course, and it never pretends to be one. The rebuilt layout is forgiving enough for newer golfers but still reacts sharply to Texas wind. Good TifEagle greens, fair pricing, and a clever rerouting make the course more interesting than its old Twin Wells reputation suggests.

I will cover rates, pace, dress rules, and the holes that make the redesign work. You can also browse our complete collection of golf club reviews.

Irving works because it gives ordinary golfers room to play without removing every meaningful decision.

What I Liked

The redesign made Irving easier to enjoy without making it dull. Wider fairways support beginners, while bunkers, wind, and angled greens still reward thoughtful shots.

  • The value is honest. Published rates include the cart, tax, and no surprise facility charge.
  • The greens earn steady local praise. DFW golfers repeatedly describe them as above average for the price.
  • The skyline view feels genuinely local. It gives the back nine an identity that many suburban courses lack.
  • The 2019 rebuild was substantial. Eight holes were rerouted, drainage improved, and greens were rebuilt to USGA recommendations.
  • The Hideout has a fun story. The grill references Bonnie and Clyde, who reportedly used nearby routes while escaping.

The National Recreation and Park Association’s project account explains how prairie grass and wider fairways changed the former Twin Wells site.

What I Didn’t Like

Irving’s weaknesses are mostly about setting and traffic. Power lines, exposed land, and a full municipal tee sheet can interrupt the charm.

  • Pace can reach four to four-and-a-half hours. Local golfers mention slow rounds more often than poor conditions.
  • The open layout can look industrial. Power lines and surrounding roads remain visible despite smart shaping.
  • Wind changes the course quickly. An easy-looking hole can become awkward when the usual south wind rises.
  • Nonresidents cannot use the published walking rate. That limits the bargain for visitors who prefer carrying.

A single-rider cart also costs $20 extra. Pair up unless you have a real reason not to.

Membership & Fees

Irving has no initiation fee or monthly dues because it is fully public. The strongest deal belongs to city residents, but standard public pricing remains competitive across DFW.

Time Public Mon–Thu Public Fri–Sun Irving Resident Mon–Thu Irving Resident Fri–Sun
Before 2 p.m. $50 $60 $43 $50
2–4 p.m. $45 $55 $40 $45
After 4 p.m. $36 $46 $36 $36

These are the club’s latest published rates, and every listed amount includes tax and cart. Irving residents can walk for $33 weekdays or $40 on weekends. Seniors receive additional reductions.

Callaway rentals cost $50, and reservations open seven days ahead. The club requires 24 hours’ notice for cancellations. Compared with premium DFW public courses, Irving sits firmly in the affordable tier.

Facilities & Amenities

The facilities cover everything needed for a complete municipal golf day. Do not expect a resort clubhouse, but the practice areas and grill are more useful than flashy.

  • Golf: Par-71 course with four main tee distances from 4,948 to 6,632 yards
  • Practice: Full-grass range, chipping green, and putting green
  • Range balls: $8 small, $12 medium, and $16 large
  • Dining: The Hideout Bar & Grill inside the renovated clubhouse
  • Rentals: Callaway club sets for traveling golfers
  • Turf: TifEagle Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways
  • Unexpected detail: Ground-game approaches remain possible despite the course’s modern rebuild

The American Society of Golf Course Architects details the site’s design constraints and rebuilt surfaces.

Best Time to Visit

March through May and October through November offer Irving’s best balance of turf, temperature, and value. Weekday mornings are the safest choice for pace.

Summer twilight rates look attractive, but exposed sections provide little shelter from heat. Wind also tends to strengthen later in the day. If you play after 4 p.m., bring water and accept that finishing 18 may depend on pace.

Winter can deliver excellent bargain golf during mild stretches. Check recent weather because the Trinity River setting and low ground can react poorly after sustained rain.

Dress Code & Etiquette

Irving enforces traditional golf attire on both the course and range. Men need collared shirts, while all players should wear proper golf shorts, skorts, or pants.

Blue jeans, gym shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, cutoffs, and swimwear are not allowed. Shorts should reach Bermuda length. The course uses soft spikes and does not permit metal spikes.

The first-time mistake is assuming “municipal” means any clothing is acceptable. It does not. Outside food, drinks, and coolers are also prohibited.

This club is a good fit if you want a forgiving DFW round with enough wind and bunkering to stay engaging.

This club is a good fit if price matters more than prestige. The all-in rate is especially fair for Irving residents.

Is Irving Golf Club open to the public?

Yes. Irving Golf Club is a public, city-owned golf course with no membership requirement or initiation fee. Anyone can reserve a tee time up to seven days ahead. City residents receive lower rates, but visitors can book the same tee sheet at the standard public price.

Who designed Irving Golf Club?

Brian Ault designed the original Twin Wells course, which opened in 1988. John Colligan led a major redesign before its 2019 reopening as Irving Golf Club. The work rerouted eight holes, improved drainage, rebuilt greens and tees, and added native prairie areas.

The layout is relatively flat and walkable, but published walking rates are limited to Irving residents. Residents pay $33 Monday through Thursday or $40 Friday through Sunday. Other public rates include a shared cart, so visiting walkers should call the golf shop before booking.

Is Irving Golf Club good for beginners?

Yes. Wide fairways, limited forced carries, and forward tees near 4,948 yards make Irving friendly for beginners and higher handicaps. The course still teaches useful skills because prairie rough, bunkers, and wind punish careless targets without making every miss a lost ball.

Verdict & Score

GCR Score: 4.0 / 5 — Recommended

Irving earns its score through value, playability, and a thoughtful municipal rebuild. Strong greens and Dallas skyline views lift it above a routine city course.

Points come off for slow periods and the exposed, industrial edges. Our review methodology explains how value and consistency shape the rating.

If you want relaxed public golf near Dallas, play Irving. If scenery and difficulty matter more, choose Waterchase instead.
